The Mount Mitchell Scenic Drive is the latest route to receive official "scenic byway" status from the state of North Carolina.

This 52-mile drive begins atop Mount Mitchell (elev. 6,684 feet) on N.C. Hwy. 128 and wanders through picturesque countryside surrounding Eastern America's highest peak.

Along the way, motorists enjoy overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway; Toe River art studios along N.C. Hwy. 80; shops and restaurants in downtown Burnsville just off U.S. 19E; and miles of mountain scenery along U.S. 19 in western Yancey County and eastern Madison County.

Say goodbye to fast-paced modern life and hello to a hidden drive in the calm, cool mountains of Western North Carolina.
